26 Apr What to do After a Root Canal Treatment
A root canal treatment is an excellent solution to save a tooth that requires more than just a filling. Normally, those who have an infection at the base of the tooth will need this procedure before it causes further damage and spreads into the gums and other parts of the tooth. As root canal treatments affect the whole structure of your tooth, including the pulp, proper aftercare is highly recommended to keep your teeth healthy and enable them to recover faster.
If you are getting a root canal treatment soon, you should learn how to take care of it correctly. Here are some easy recovery tips for you!
1. Avoid eating immediately after the treatment
You should wait before eating after a root canal treatment. Allow some time for your tooth to settle before using it again. The filling will also require some time to seal properly. When you do eat, and to reduce any stress on the treated tooth, avoid chewing on that side of the mouth. Also, choose soft food during your recovery period since crunchy foods can affect the filling or even damage the treated tooth. It’s best to wait for a while before returning to your regular diet.
2. Clean the treated area gently
Regular cleaning is a necessity. However, be very careful when brushing or flossing the treated area. Make sure you are brushing and/or flossing it gently, but thoroughly. Don’t apply too much pressure as it may affect the treated tooth. As an extra step, rinse with antibacterial mouthwash to keep your mouth clean.
3. Take medication when required
Temporary pain is common in the first few days after a treatment. If you’re experiencing any discomfort, and to help reduce the swelling, take pain relievers immediately. If you are unsure of the medications, simply ask your dentist.
